How will new technology improve mobile businesses?
You may have heard whispers here and there or maybe you’ve seen a report on one of your news media resources. But there’s new technologies that can and will help create and strengthen the growing mobile businesses sector.
First let’s get through a question I’m asked often. What’s a mobile business? Since the economy tanked and many of us found ourselves either laid off, let go or downsized, more and more of us decided to or plan to start our own business. There’s obvious reasons and many. The uniqueness that I see about this entrepreneurial revolution is that mobile businesses are not your traditional path that we’re accustomed to seeing or following. No, this new entrepreneur is going directly TO the customer as opposed to the strategy of “build it and they’ll come” brick and mortar way of doing things.
Minimal start up cost with a very specific clientele target is the new strategy. We’re GOING MOBILE. Food trucks, pet related business, Internet based business, arts and crafts, etc. Along with the ever expanding personal service businesses that include personal training, in home cooking and in home care along with personal consulting on all sorts of different matters to name a few. We’re starting to take advantage of the current technologies that make a mobile business function and be more successful.
The evolution of the smart phone obviously has been one of, if not the most important tool for the mobile business. Today, you can literally run a business from your phone. Let’s take a look at two technologies that can and will make the mobile business more profitable. First, we’ll look at an existing technology that’s really starting to hit it’s stride right now. The mobile payment industry. Then we’ll take a look at an emerging technology that will change the face of manufacturing and everything else for that matter, forever! 3D printing.
Mobile payment technologies
This field is large and diverse so I’ll stick to what I know and that’s the mobile credit card reader and smart phone application. Mobile credit card readers plug directly into your phone enabling you to accept credit cards anywhere. Own a food truck? You better use one. Travel to flea markets, arts and craft events? You better use one. Are you a photographer? Direct seller? Plumber? Tow truck operator? You better use one. The list goes on and on with businesses that should be accepting credit cards and this technology allows them to do it. Don’t be that guy or gal that watches another sale disappear because you can’t answer that one question more and more of your customers are asking. - “Do you take credit card?” Check out out our articles on mobile credit card readers and how they can improve your bottom line.
3d printing technology
3D printing is one of the “prominent technology trends expected to influence the consumer electronics industry in the years ahead,” according to the 2013 edition of “Five Technology Trends to Watch” report by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). You can download the report here.
This technology will enable you to manufacture your own products. Imagine that for a minute? So, you’re in the arts and craft industry and you make a particular item that turns out to be your best seller on the weekends. What would normally take you hours and hours of work each week creating will now be reduced to creating the prototype and uploading that into the printer and designating how many you need. Wow! Sounds like The Matrix kind of stuff doesn’t it? As this technology develops and improves the potential uses for it will be limitless. Check out this overview on 3D printing here.
These are just two technologies that scratch the surface with what’s here now and with what’s right around the corner that mobile businesses can and will be able to take advantage of.
